STEM experience with the SNZ

We are seeking bright, engaged, and curious students to participate in a weeklong immersion into bioinspired engineering through independent, mentored research projects. In a collaborative effort between the Leftwich Lab at the George Washington University (https://leftwichlab.seas.gwu.edu/)  and the Smithsonian National Zoo, students will learn principles of bioinspired design, engineering laboratory techniques and measurement tools, creative problem solving, data analysis, and technical communication skills. The application can be found at: https://goo.gl/forms/RPK2OafiljMlOOqu2

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How much does this program cost?

A: Nothing! It’s free to students.

Q: What will the days consist of?

A: On day 1, the students will travel to the Smithsonian National Zoo and meet with animal keepers and curators to talk about animals on the American Trail, one of which will be chosen as an inspiration for research. For the rest of the week, the days will consist of mini-lectures on engineering topics (such as basic biomechanics, experimental design, measurement techniques, data analysis and creating effective scientific communication) as well as spending time in the laboratory facilities at GWU. On the last day, students will create an infographic on their research and conclusions to be displayed at the Smithsonian National Zoo later this year.

Q: What kind of skills do students need before applying?

A: Students should be curious and excited about science and engineering but no prior experience, laboratory or otherwise, is required.

Q: What is the time commitment for this program?

A: Students need to commit to be at GWU from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday of their designated week. There will be no exceptions to this due to the intense and rigorous nature of the program.  On a Saturday in late summer or early fall (date TBD and agreed upon by the participants) we will visit the SNZ to present the infographic to the visitors. It is hoped that all students will participate.

Students must have transportation to and from GWU each day.  The Science and Engineering Hall is located directly across the street from the Foggy Bottom Metro stop.

Q: Who can apply?

A: Any rising senior in a DC, MD or VA high school can apply.  Be prepared to give the name of a math or science teacher to serve as a reference.

Q: I have a different question!

A: Email Alexa at abaumer@gwmail.gwu.edu.
